Anaren Reports 4th Quarter and Fiscal 2010 Year-End Results

SYRACUSE, N.Y., Aug. 4, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Anaren, Inc. (Nasdaq:ANEN) today reported net sales for the fiscal 2010 fourth quarter ended June 30, 2010 of $45.3 million, up 3.2% from $43.8 million for the fourth quarter of last year.

GAAP (U.S. generally accepted accounting principles) net income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 was $3.8 million, or $0.26 per diluted share, compared to $3.5 million, or $0.24 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of last year.

Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share, excluding non-cash equity based compensation and intangible amortization, was $0.32 for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 compared to non-GAAP earnings per share of $0.30 for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009.

GAAP operating income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 was $5.4 million, or 11.8% of net sales, compared to $5.1 million, or 11.7% of net sales for the fourth quarter of last year. Non-GAAP operating income for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010, which excludes non-cash equity based compensation and acquisition related intangible amortization was $6.7 million, or 14.9% of net sales up 5.1% from $6.4 million, or 14.6% of net sales for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009.

Income taxes for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 were $1.5 million, representing an effective tax rate of 28.8% compared to income tax expense of $1.5 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009, representing an effective tax rate of 30.3%. The projected effective tax rate for fiscal 2011, absent one-time events, is expected to be approximately 32.0%.

Lawrence A. Sala, Anaren's Chairman, President and CEO said, "The strong fourth quarter performance for both the Wireless and the Space & Defense Group drove record net sales and earnings for the fiscal year. In addition, record new orders of $57 million for the fourth quarter and $174 million for the 2010 fiscal year position the Company well for continuing growth in fiscal 2011."

Net sales for the year ended June 30, 2010, were $168.8 million, compared to net sales of $166.9 million for last year. GAAP net income for fiscal 2010 was $13.7 million, or $0.94 per diluted share, compared to $9.9 million, or $0.70 per diluted share for fiscal 2009.

Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share, which excludes non-cash equity based compensation, acquisition related inventory step-up (fiscal 2009 only) and intangible amortization, was $1.16 for fiscal 2010 compared to non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of $1.04 for fiscal 2009.

During the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010, the Company generated $9.4 million in operating cash flow compared to $12.2 million in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. Additionally, during the current quarter the Company repurchased approximately 3,000 shares of its common stock for a total of $50,000 and expended $1.0 million for capital additions. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable debt securities at June 30, 2010 were $73.7 million, up $8.3 million from $65.4 million at March 31, 2010.

Wireless Group

Wireless Group net sales for the quarter were $14.5 million, down 4.2% from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009, but up 2.4% from third quarter of fiscal 2010 levels driven by continuing strong demand for standard component products.

Demand for consumer and infrastructure standard component products remained robust throughout the quarter. New product investments for the quarter included the expansion of the Xinger III, consumer component and lower cost high power resistor product lines. In addition, the Group introduced the new low power wireless Anaren Integrated Radio (AIR) module product line. This line of FCC compliant wireless transceiver modules offer industry leading size and performance.

Customers that generated greater than 10% of Wireless Group net sales for the quarter were E.G. Components, Motorola, Richardson, and Nokia-Siemens Networks.

Space & Defense Group

Space & Defense Group net sales for the quarter were $30.7 million, up 7.2% from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2009. The continuing growth in net sales and improved execution on production programs positively impacted the group's profitability for the quarter.

New orders for the quarter totaled $41.0 million and included contracts for ground-based and airborne radar, counter IED, airborne jamming and passive ranging applications. The acquisitions completed at the beginning of fiscal 2009 have strengthened the Group's competitive position and have increased the Group's dollar content on a number of new subsystem opportunities. Space & Defense Group order backlog at June 30, 2010 was $89.6 million.

Customers that generated greater than 10% of Space & Defense Group net sales for the quarter were Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.

Non-GAAP Financial Measures

In addition to presenting financial results calculated in accordance with GAAP, Anaren's earnings release contains non-GAAP financial measures including: non-GAAP gross profit, non-GAAP operating income, non-GAAP net income and non-GAAP net income per diluted share. These non-GAAP measures are each adjusted from GAAP results to exclude certain non-cash items including equity based compensation and acquisition related inventory step-up and intangible amortization.

The Company believes these non-GAAP financial measures provide useful information to both management and investors to help understand and compare business trends among reporting periods on a consistent basis. Additionally, these non-GAAP financial measurements are one of the primary indicators management uses for planning and forecasting in future periods. The presentation of this additional information should not be considered in isolation or as a substitute for results prepared in accordance with GAAP.

Outlook

For the first quarter of fiscal 2011, we anticipate comparable sales for the Wireless Group and the Space & Defense Group compared to fourth quarter levels. As a result, we expect net sales to be in the range of $42 to $46 million.  We expect GAAP net earnings per diluted share to be in the range of $0.24 - $0.27, using an anticipated tax rate of approximately 32.0% and inclusive of approximately $0.06 per share related to expected equity based compensation expense and acquisition related amortization of intangibles. Non-GAAP net earnings per diluted share are expected to be in the range of $0.29 - $0.33 for the first quarter.
