Applied DNA Assures Currency Security

Conviction Record for SigNature DNA Taggant Platform Continues to Grow

STONY BROOK, NY--(Marketwire - January 4, 2011) - Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. (OTCBB: APDN), a provider of DNA-based security solutions, announced that their DNA evidence was pivotal in helping West Midlands Police and Metropolitan Police Flying Squad arrest and convict two cash-in-transit (CVIT) criminals.

SigNature DNA "Critical"

In the West Midlands, Colin Waddingham was found guilty of cash-in-transit robbery and associated offenses and sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment. He was found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict based, in part, on the SigNature® DNA evidence presented during the trial. DC Daniel Halford of West Midlands police said: "This is a fantastic result. I would like to thank all involved for their contributions and pay tribute to the non-police witnesses who had the courage to give evidence. SigNature DNA was critical in linking the recovered cash to the defendant."

SigNature DNA: Dynamic Law Enforcement Technology

Waddingham had robbed a Loomis driver of a cash box at a Shell Petrol Station in Acocks Green, Birmingham (UK). Dressed from head to foot in black clothing and with a face covering, he threatened the victim with a crowbar and made off in a black BMW displaying cloned plates. At the time of his arrest, police found in the car evidence from the robbery including one of the stolen cash bags, stolen dyed cash, the cloned number plates used in the robbery, the crowbar and a 12" machete in the driver's door well. Found in his wallet were further dyed notes from the robbery. The dyed notes were identified and traced back to the specific robbery as a result of the forensic DNA authentication of their taggant by APDN. A crowbar and machete were no match for this advanced law enforcement technology.

In London, the DNA evidence provided by APDN's taggant assisted the Flying Squad in convicting Alpesh Daudia of two separate CViT crimes. Daudia was stopped on suspicion of a robbery and as the officers searched him, a wad of dye-stained cash fell to the ground from his waist. Forensic tests of the dye-stained cash found on Daudia, revealed that the cash was from an earlier cash-in-transit robbery. Although the police had not previously linked him to it, the APDN taggant provided forensic proof to conclusively connect Daudia to this unsolved CViT robbery from June 19, 2009.

DNA Taggant: A Unique Tool

Sgt Andrew McGuire, of the Flying Squad, said: "The investigation highlights the importance of APDN's unique DNA taggant as a tool to track those who commit these crimes. Without these, I doubt either crime would have been solved, nor Daudia brought to justice."

Tony Benson, Risk Director, Loomis UK, stated: "We are pleased with the sentencing of these cash-in-transit crimes. We are especially gratified that since the deployment of SigNature DNA in Loomis cash boxes, we have sent cash-in-transit criminals to jail for an accumulated total of more than 120 years."

Growing Interest in APDN Cash in Transit Services Protection

"Our DNA platforms are gaining new markets in military and police applications, in response to our reliable performance in cash-in-transit services," said APDN CEO, Dr. James Hayward. "Recently, we have been fielding inquiries for our cash-protection platform throughout Europe and Asia."
