WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - March 18, 2011) - The Online News Association, the world's largest membership organization of digital journalists, today announced the return of a $20,000 scholarship from Google that will cover travel and expenses for the Student Newsroom at ONA's annual conference.
The scholarship will defray all costs for the 20 undergraduate and graduate journalism students heading to Boston for the Online News Association Conference & Awards Banquet, Sept. 22-24. Applications are still open; interested students can apply at ona11.journalists.org until March 23.
ONA11 is expected to attract more than 1,100 online journalists from around the world to the Boston Marriott Copley Place for three days of training, panels and workshops on emerging trends, as well as an all-day Career Summit and Job Fair. Last year's event in Washington, D.C. sold out.
Mentored by working digital journalists and journalism professors, students selected for the Newsroom will take over the ONA11 website for four days and use a range of digital formats and styles to cover people, events and issues, including interactive text and graphics, live blogging, social media, mobile, slideshows, audio and video.
Under the direction of Committee Co-Chairs Sara Kelly of National University and Michelle Johnson of Boston University, the group will be getting right to work. In the months leading up to ONA11, they'll give attendees a comprehensive preview, including details on session topics and interviews with conference presenters and high-profile speakers.
"These young journalists, chosen from the best applicants across the United States and Canada, will bring a rich, varied set of multimedia skills and fresh perspective to ONA11 coverage," said ONA Executive Director Jane McDonnell.
