Del-Sano Completes LIFE at Saint Michael's PACE Center in Newark, New Jersey

Newark Outpatient Facility to Provide Health Services for Low-Income, Frail Seniors

UNION, NJ--(Marketwire - Jun 6, 2011) - Del-Sano Contracting Corporation, a general contracting, design/build and construction management services firm, today announced the completion of construction of LIFE at Saint Michael's, a PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) Center located in the Saint James Medical Arts Building at 155 Jefferson Street in Newark, N.J. This 23,500 square-foot facility is designed to provide comprehensive health and wellness services to qualified seniors who live at home.

LIFE at Saint Michael's outpatient facility is a complete renovation of the 2nd floor and part of the 5th floor at the former Saint James Hospital, now a Medical Arts building. The facility, operated by Saint Michael's Medical Center -- a regional teaching and research hospital located nearby on Central Avenue -- will offer primary care services, activities, meals, transportation, rehabilitation therapy, social services, and case management to qualified, seniors.

"PACE is a vital interactive program enabling independence and serving the healthcare and social needs of the aging. As a Newark native, I am personally grateful and have a sense of pride for the opportunity to build this project at Saint James, which was once our family hospital," said Angelo Del Russo, CEO of Del-Sano. "Working in occupied medical care areas, and coordinating the plumbing, life safety, and mechanical systems of the facility presented a variety of challenges. However, we knew that an operating PACE center -- which will enable the elderly to remain close to family, in their homes and communities, while also receiving personal attention to their health and well-being -- was a goal worth working toward."

"Saint Michael's is firmly committed to meeting the comprehensive needs of senior residents of the Ironbound and surrounding communities," said Susan Wood, executive director of Life at Saint Michael's. "We join Del-Sano and our other partners in celebrating the completion of this construction project."

PACE is a Medicare program for older adults over the age of 55 who are in need of supportive services -- both clinical and social. This program provides community-based care and services to seniors who qualify for a nursing home level of care, but choose to remain at home. PACE was created as a way to provide seniors, their families, caregivers, and professional medical providers flexibility to meet the healthcare needs of seniors and help them continue living in their community.

The project was managed by Robert Montesano, president, and Mike Patriarca, project superintendent at Del-Sano. The architect on the project was Kitchen & Associates Architectural Services, PA of Collingswood, N.J. The project administration for the architect was efficiently performed by Maria Carrion-Georges.

Mary Johannesen, AIA, LEED AP, principal at Kitchen & Associates, noted that "the design vision for transforming this medical arts facility in the heart of the Ironbound District of Newark into an inviting and supportive environment for the elders in this community has been realized. We've given new life to this facility, where more than 75 seniors a day will receive health, wellness, rehabilitative, and nutritional services and participate in a wide range of social and recreational activities."
