Dr. John Griggs, Center for Environmental Radioanalytical Laboratory Science US Environmental Protection Agency Awarded On the Front Line Award by Association of Public Health Laboratories


OMAHA, NE--(Marketwire - Jun 7, 2011) - The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) has recognized Dr. John Griggs, director of the Center for Environmental Radioanalytical Laboratory Science (CERLS) within the US Environmental Protection Agency, with APHL's 2011 On the Front Line Award. The award was presented at a ceremony on Tuesday, June 7 during APHL's Annual Meeting and 5th State Environmental Laboratory Conference in Omaha, Nebraska.

The On the Front Line Award is presented annually to an individual or laboratory outside of the APHL membership who makes significant contributions to the advancement of public health laboratory science and/or practice.

As director of CERLS, Dr. Griggs manages laboratory staff who perform more than 10,000 environmental, radioanalytical and mixed waste analyses per year on a variety of environmental matrices. He chaired the multi-agency workgroup that developed the Multi-Agency Radiological Laboratory Analytical Protocols (MARLAP) manual, a 1500-page guidance document for radiological laboratories. Dr. Griggs is a nationally recognized expert in radioanalytical science who has worked with the EPA for 18 years.
