Federal Prosecutor Michael Pauze Joins King & Spalding

WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwire - Jun 13, 2011) - Michael R. Pauzé, a senior federal prosecutor with substantial experience investigating and litigating complex fraud, regulatory and financial offences, has rejoined the special matters and government investigations practice of King & Spalding as a partner in Washington, D.C., the firm announced today. Pauzé previously served since 2009 as deputy chief of the Southern Division in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Maryland.

"With a dozen years of service in the U.S. Department of Justice overseeing hundreds of investigations and prosecutions, including as a prosecutor on the Enron Task Force, Mike has earned a reputation as a highly regarded trial lawyer," said Christopher A. Wray, chair of King & Spalding's special matters and government investigations practice.

Wick Sollers, managing partner of King & Spalding's Washington, D.C. office, added: "We are excited that Mike is returning to the firm and rejoining our team. We saw firsthand his outstanding legal talent when he was with us prior to his government service, and the knowledge, experience and skill he brings with him provides additional strength and insight to our special matters and white-collar criminal defense group."

Pauzé is expected to focus on government and corporate internal investigations and litigation relating to financial matters such as tax and accounting fraud, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and life sciences sector, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other matters related to federal enforcement actions.

Pauzé joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in Greenbelt, Maryland, in 2004, serving as an assistant U.S. attorney before becoming deputy chief of the Southern Division. He directed a wide range of prosecutions including offenses involving tax and corporate fraud, the Bank Secrecy Act, false statements and claims to federal agencies, regulatory violations and public corruption. Formerly, he was a trial attorney on the DOJ's Enron Task Force and in the criminal enforcement section of the DOJ's tax division. He led the investigation of potential tax violations in connection with the collapse of Enron Corporation, securing the conviction of a company assistant treasurer. He also headed, in multiple U.S. jurisdictions, investigations and prosecutions of tax offenses collectively involving the concealment of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue by U.S. and foreign corporations. He was an associate in King & Spalding's Washington, D.C., office from 1994 to 1999.

Pauzé earned a J.D. degree from Vanderbilt University Law School and a B.S. in Finance, with high distinction, from Indiana University. He received numerous awards from the U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Department of Justice for superior performance and excellence as a lawyer.

"I am delighted to be returning to King & Spalding to continue my investigations and litigation practice," said Pauzé. "I know from personal experience that King & Spalding brims with talented and hardworking lawyers. I look forward to once again joining my colleagues on the special matters and government investigations team, which has a breadth and depth of experience that is second to none."

King & Spalding expanded its highly regarded special matters and government investigations practice into California in January 2011 with the addition of partner Ross W. Nadel, a veteran Bay Area federal prosecutor. The practice has more than 60 lawyers in offices in Atlanta, Houston, London, Moscow, New York, San Francisco, Silicon Valley and Washington, D.C.

King & Spalding's special matters and government investigations practice has a wealth of experience in successfully representing corporations and individuals in complex federal and state criminal investigations, internal investigations and Congressional investigations, as well as in related civil and regulatory proceedings. Lawyers in this practice are recognized leaders in the field with decades of experience from the defense, prosecution, and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement perspectives, including more than a dozen former federal prosecutors and other enforcement officials.
