Addition of daily news blog enhances student interaction and provides platform to "sound off"

NEW YORK, Sept. 7, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Channel One News, the leading television news network for teens, today announced the launch of the free Channel One News mobile phone application. The easy to download Channel One News "app" allows users to access and engage with Channel One's award-winning daily news content on their smart phones, with features including select video segments, up-to-the-minute headlines, interactive and social media functionality. Channel One will also launch its daily blog, Right Now (www.channelone.com/blog), on the Channel One website this week. Right Now will serve as a platform where Channel One News anchors will share stories from the frontlines, as well as their personal perspectives on a variety of issues that impact the youth audience.

"Our viewers continue to move at a rapid pace with increasing expectations for content delivered on their terms. The Channel News "app" puts, quite literally at their fingertips, the news and features they have come to expect on a daily basis and allows us to stay connected with our audience in a truly relevant way as they move through their day," commented Kent Haehl, CEO, Channel One Network.

The news blog Right Now features daily entries from Channel One News anchors Jessica Kumari, Shelby Holliday, Justin Finch and other team contributors, and will provide the news team with a forum to continue the conversation occurring in the classroom each day. Right Now allows students the ability to directly connect with the Channel One team and engage across a wide range of topics and issues that matter to this perpetually connected generation.

"The Channel One website launches this school year with a dynamic new look and features that represent the energy that fuels our work on a daily basis," stated Angela Hunter, SVP, Executive Producer, Channel One News. "The integration of Right Now is a natural and important extension of our news platform and will serve as a community where viewers can get to know the personalities that inform and inspire them in the classroom each day. Right Now encourages young people to participate in thought provoking conversations surrounding current events."

Additionally, the Channel One News Fall broadcast returns with new stories and in-depth coverage of important global issues. This year, Channel One News will feature:

  • A special edition dedicated to the 10th anniversary of 9/11. On September 12, 2011 the entire 12-minute broadcast will commemorate the events of that day with first-person stories from young people who were personally affected by the tragedy.
  • Jessica Kumari travels to Afghanistan to look at how the United States is managing the war after a decade of fighting. She will also travel around the globe to look at successful education programs in other countries and investigates why the United States educational system appears to be lagging behind.
  • Justin Finch tours the ruins of ancient Egypt in a report about how that country is trying to recover some its lost artifacts.
  • Shelby Holliday visits a nuclear plant, a wind farm, and a coal mine in a series that examines energy in the United States and explores how much energy Americans really use, where it comes from, and what's being done to make sure we have enough for the future.
  • One Vote Series: Channel One begins its in-depth coverage following the road to the 2012 presidential election and will again launch its unique program to engage students in the voting process.

Channel One News continues its partnership with CBS News Productions to co-produce Channel One's longstanding, award-winning 12-minute news broadcast. Additionally, this summer Channel One News announced a partnership with Promethean, a global education company, for the launch of Channel One News InterActiv, a new "on-demand" classroom content and professional development offering that combines Channel One's award-winning daily content with Promethean's innovative interactive technology.

"Through our programming and supplemental interactive content, Channel One has the unique opportunity to expand the world of our next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders on an everyday basis," concluded Mr. Haehl. "We begin this school year energized with multiple, modern offerings that respond to our audience's immediate needs and with enhanced platforms that feed young people's desire for self expression and the utility to voice their opinions."
