Tekmira Granted an Injunction Against Certain Individuals From AlCana Technologies by the Supreme Court of British Columbia

Injunction Orders Confidential Information to be Returned to Tekmira

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Jan. 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation (Nasdaq:TKMR) (TSX:TKM), a leading developer of RNA interference (RNAi) therapeutics, disclosed today that the Supreme Court of British Columbia granted Tekmira's application for an injunction that orders confidential documents and materials be returned to Tekmira and prohibits the use of Tekmira's confidential information. The injunction also requires the defendants to identify every person and corporation to whom the information was provided or communicated.

In November 2011, Tekmira filed a Notice of Civil Claim in the Supreme Court of British Columbia against certain individuals from AlCana Technologies, Inc. ("AlCana"). In its action, Tekmira alleges that over 12,000 documents containing Tekmira's confidential information and trade secrets were downloaded from Tekmira's electronic document management system, taken from Tekmira, and used by AlCana to produce lipids belonging to Tekmira, including the lipid MC3. Tekmira discovered the alleged document downloading in the course of producing documents in Tekmira's litigation against Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and AlCana in the Massachusetts Superior Court. In its Civil Claim, Tekmira is also seeking general and punitive damages as compensation for the harm done.

About RNAi and Tekmira's LNP Technology

RNAi therapeutics have the potential to treat a broad number of human diseases by "silencing" disease causing genes. The discoverers of RNAi, a gene silencing mechanism used by all cells, were awarded the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. RNAi therapeutics, such as "siRNA," require delivery technology to be effective systemically. Tekmira believes its LNP technology represents the most widely adopted delivery technology for the systemic delivery of RNAi therapeutics. Tekmira's LNP platform is being utilized in multiple clinical trials by both Tekmira and its partners. Tekmira's LNP technology (formerly referred to as stable nucleic acid-lipid particles or SNALP) encapsulates siRNAs with high efficiency in uniform lipid nanoparticles that are effective in delivering RNAi therapeutics to disease sites in numerous preclinical models. Tekmira's LNP formulations are manufactured by a proprietary method which is robust, scalable and highly reproducible, and LNP-based products have been reviewed by multiple FDA divisions for use in clinical trials. LNP formulations comprise several lipid components that can be adjusted to suit the specific application.
