Mobile Security Awareness: Demystified!

Nashville, TN, April 3, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Security expert Winn Schwartau, and The Security Awareness Company (SAC), releases its newest multi-media training course "Mobile Security 2012" to the private and public sectors.

"There is so much misinformation, so much disinformation, so much misleading commentary about mobile security, I just had to step in," said Schwartau, who is well known for not mincing his words. "After almost thirty years in security, I guess I get a little finicky when I see terminology misused, misapplied and all too often, used to mislead."

The Mobile Security Awareness Course was designed for non-technical users.  As companies increasingly use smart phone and tablets in addition to laptops for their remote work force, their users need to understand the increased risks these intelligent endpoints present to the user, his or her privacy, the company, its data and regulatory responsibilities.

In 2009, Schwartau began warning the industry about the Perfect Storm of mobile security, and the coming smart phone that he dubs, Cyberwar-4G. "Mobile devices are not phones. They are computers, powerful, small, that happen to also offer voice communications. Users and companies alike must learn the good, the bad and the ugly about attaching these devices to their networks."

The new Mobile Security course touches on every issue users, executives and IT professionals care about.  "And so much of it comes down to 'Consumerization of the Enterprise Network', also known as "to BYOD or not to BYOD?"  for mobile device," says Schwartau. "How do you securely manage and control a device that contains both personal and business information - yet was never designed to do so?"

The security problems are not obvious, and every mobile enterprise user needs to get a fast handle on what they are doing, what they should be doing, and most importantly, what they should NOT be doing.

Phishing attacks and scams are moving to mobile platforms at an alarming rate. "The mobile threat is real as we deploy 20 billion smart devices by 2020 and tens of billions of apps - the most efficient malware distribution system ever invented by man," said Rob Smith, CTO of MAD Partners.

The course covers risk, compliance, iOS and Android devices, the threats from organized crime and mobile crime stats with a strong focus on hostile mobile apps. It also discusses the state of the art for mobile WiFi, VoIP, data protection, voice mail and encryption techniques. The differences between laptop and phone/tablet mobile security are explained simply, for the average user to understand.

"The bottom line is user behavior," says Schwartau. "If we can change behavior, we will achieve better security.  Coming to grips with the myriad of issues surrounding the secure integration of mobile devices into enterprise networks is an immense challenge for many IT departments - thus the immediate need for mobile awareness training."
