The Mommy Makeover: One Size Does Not Fit All, Says Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon Byron D. Poindexter, M.D.

From Sagging Eyelids to Stretch Marks, a Custom Combination of Procedures Can Address the Effects of Pregnancy and Raising Children on the Body and the Face

RESTON, Va., May 8, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- A Mommy Makeover, a combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to restore the body to its pre-pregnancy state, can refresh a patient's face—and life—as well.

Dr. Byron D. Poindexter, board-certified plastic surgeon with The Austin-Weston Center for Cosmetic Surgery in Reston, VA, says that a Mommy Makeover is "really whatever we want it to be. Most women see the effects of pregnancy on their stomach and their breasts, but the effects of pregnancy are really on each and every area of the body. Maybe it's extra lines and wrinkles on the face, or the neck starts to sag.

"So what we do is customize the procedures and use them to address the toll that pregnancy and the stress of raising children can take on the body and the face," Dr. Poindexter continues. "Women want back the body and the self-image they had before they were mothers, often choosing to have facial procedures like eyelid surgery or neck lifts along with the more standard Mommy Makeover procedures like a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or lift, or liposuction."

According to a survey by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), 62 percent of mothers said that they would consider a "Mommy Makeover" if cost were not an issue.

Dr. Poindexter adds that in his experience, guilt plays a role as well. "A Mommy Makeover is a hard present for mothers to give to themselves," he says. "There's a lot of guilt about doing something for themselves, since women are always doing for others. But when patients get to that point and say 'it's time,' it's an overwhelmingly positive experience. I hear 'I wish I'd done this sooner' a lot."

One of Dr. Poindexter's Mommy Makeover patients, who had breast augmentation and a breast lift, adds, "I wanted to feel better about my body. I had children and after nursing two kids, my body didn't look or feel the same as it did prior to having children. Instead of wishing for my old body back, I decided to do something for myself and restore and improve the old me. Because I took that step to use cosmetic surgery to restore and enhance my appearance, I have improved confidence and self-esteem, and my husband's endless compliments on how good I look!"

Dr. Poindexter has performed hundreds of Mommy Makeovers since joining the Austin-Weston Center in 1998. "Mommy Makeover" is a "term that's been around for a couple of years," says Dr. Poindexter. "I was doing them 12 years before that, before I even knew I was doing them!"

Dr. Poindexter discusses his extensive experience with Mommy Makeover surgery in a YouTube video.

In 2011, according to statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), the most common Mommy Makeover procedures performed by Dr. Poindexter were also the top 5 cosmetic surgeries for women, with women undergoing 316,848 breast augmentations, 283,669 lipoplasties (liposuction), 142,657 abdominoplasties (tummy tucks), 127,054 breast lifts, and 124,635 blepharoplasties (eyelid surgeries).
