WESTMINSTER, Colo., Sept. 11, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In the near future, as pending United States and Canadian food safety legislation—the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and the Safe Food for Canadians Act (SFCA)—becomes reality for food, ingredient, and raw material importers, supply chain transparency and documentation will become even more important than they presently are.

Food safety regulators on both sides of the 49th parallel are working towards the establishment of preventive rather than reactive food safety systems. While the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) may end up adopting different paths towards achieving this goal, food importers on both sides of the border will be increasingly held to account for the safety of the foodstuffs they bring to market. FSMA, for example, requires importers to hold imported goods to the same standards as domestic foods.
