Toronto Star to Celebrate 120th Anniversary

Canada's Most-Read Paper to Publish Special Section on Saturday Commemorating Its Historic Launch on Nov. 3, 1892

TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Nov. 1, 2012) - Regardless of how you measure it, 120 years is a remarkably long time for any company to survive.

It's especially true when that company is a newspaper, given today's rapidly changing environment that has seen many newspapers in North America stop publishing daily print editions.

And yet on Saturday, Nov. 3, the Toronto Star will commemorate its 120th anniversary, still thriving as Canada's most-read and most-successful newspaper, an outstanding achievement in the most-competitive newspaper environment in North America.

How times have changed in 120 years!

The first edition of The Evening Star appeared on the streets of Toronto on Nov. 3, 1892. The four-page newspaper, published by 21 printers locked out at the Toronto News, sold for one cent. Today, the Star now publishes its award-winning journalism in print, on its website and on numerous mobile devices.

To mark the anniversary, the Star is publishing a special 16-page section on Saturday, Nov. 3, filled with historic pictures, graphics and charts about the newspaper and its role in the city of Toronto and the country through the past 12 decades.

The section will also include poignant memories of the Toronto Star personally written by many of its readers and current journalists. Many more memories will be posted on the Star's website, thestar.com.

As well, it will contain an essay by John Honderich, chair of the board of Torstar, on the enduring core values and spirit of caring displayed by the first employees of the Star in 1892 and which are still reflected in the newspaper today.
