Eventbrite Captures British Sentiment for New Year's Eve -- Survey Finds That the British Public Wants to Celebrate, but Many Don't Because of Expense

Eventbrite Waives Fees to Encourage Britons to Host Their Perfect NYE Celebration

LONDON--(Marketwire - Nov 27, 2012) - Eventbrite, the online event registration and ticketing platform supporting entertainment and social events of all sizes, today announced a new survey revealing British sentiment around New Year's Eve celebrations. The findings portray a community eager to find local, inexpensive ways to ring in the New Year, with 91% of people saying they wish to celebrate, even though 41% believe New Year's Eve events are too expensive.

To help alleviate that pain, Eventbrite is encouraging anyone in the UK to use Eventbrite to create a New Year's Eve celebration that suits their style -- for free. To help the British celebrate New Year's this year, Eventbrite is:

  • Waiving all service fees for people interested in hosting New Year's Eve events -- for new and returning users
  • Gathering and publishing event organiser tips from gurus in the industry on the Eventbrite blog
  • Giving one lucky competition winner £5,000 to host a dream celebration

The survey, conducted for Eventbrite by Ipsos MORI among people aged 16-75 throughout Great Britain, found that 22% of people going out to celebrate New Year's Eve plan on going to a local pub, while 36% plan to go to a house party. When asked how much they expect to pay when going out, the average among responses was £76.90, which is likely why the survey also found that, when prompted, 41% of Britons feel that the most disliked element of New Year's Eve is the high cost of celebrating. (While 18% complain about having to watch Jools Holland on TV.)

Other findings include:

  • New Year's Eve is a family holiday: 44% of Brits who celebrate New Year's Eve do so just with family, while 15% celebrate just with friends
  • Variety isn't for everyone: 51% of Brits say they like to celebrate the same way every year, while 49% like to do something different each year
  • There's still time to plan that kiss: 15% of Brits say they don't know who they'll be kissing at midnight, and another 15% say they won't be kissing anyone
  • And it's not just ladies looking forward to puckering up: Men in the UK are two times more likely than women to say they hope to find love on New Year's Eve
  • There's life beyond London: Only 1% of people who live outside of London travel to the capital to celebrate New Year's Eve
  • The party keeps going: Of the adults who have made plans for 2012, 16% have been to a New Year's Day party or celebrated in January in the last 3 years

Eventbrite is eager to help people celebrate throughout the UK, in whatever way they enjoy most. It's worth noting that the survey found that 31% of Brits feel there is too much pressure to be happy on New Year's Eve, so now is the time for people to take matters into their own hands.
