Becker & Poliakoff Attorney Nelson Diaz Elected Miami-Dade County Republican Party Chairman

Former Aide to Florida Senator Marco Rubio to Stress Party Diversity, Transparency and Engagement With Younger Voters

CORAL GABLES, FL--(Marketwire - Dec 20, 2012) -  Becker & Poliakoff is proud to announce that Nelson Diaz, a shareholder in the firm's Coral Gables office, has been elected chairman of the Republican Party of Miami-Dade County.

A member of the Executive Committee of the Miami-Dade GOP since 2010, Mr. Diaz, 34, was elected at the group's December 18 meeting.

In assuming the role of chairman, Mr. Diaz promised to modernize the party, improve transparency, promote diversity and engage with a new generation of younger voters while reiterating that the party must do a better job of delivering its pro-economic growth and pro-family message.

Mr. Diaz, a member of Becker & Poliakoff's Government Law & Lobbying practice group, has been active in Republican politics in Florida for over 15 years, and previously served as Chief Legislative Aide to the Former Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and now U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.

Commenting on Mr. Diaz's candidacy, Senator Rubio stated, "Nelson has been a valuable supporter of mine and of the Republican cause since he was too young to even vote. I enthusiastically support him for Chairman of the Miami-Dade Republican Party."

Florida State Senator Anitere Flores, who entered Diaz' name in nomination for the chairmanship, stated, "I have known Nelson since grade school and can attest that he has always been there to help Republican candidates get elected. He is a man of conviction and principles. I was honored to nominate Nelson for Chairman of the Republican Executive committee of Miami-Dade County." County Commissioner Lynda Bell seconded the nomination.

Bernie Friedman, chair of Becker & Poliakoff's Government Law & Lobbying practice group, added, "Nelson represents a new generation of Republican activists. He has the energy, vision and drive to engage young voters and diversify the party base. At this historic time for the party, he will have opportunities to become a national GOP leader."

At Becker & Poliakoff, attorney Diaz primarily represents clients in Tallahassee before the legislative and executive branches of state government. He is especially knowledgeable on Florida's budget and appropriations process and has helped guide legislation and appropriations through the committee process to the floor of the House and Senate and, ultimately, onto the governor's desk.

Mr. Diaz received his B.A. degree from Florida International University and his J.D. degree from the University of Florida, cum laude. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2004 and joined Becker & Poliakoff the following year.

Mr. Diaz began his political career as a volunteer in the 1996 Presidential race in Florida, working alongside other volunteers to build a strong Republican Party base in South Florida. Subsequently, he joined the staff of Rep. Rubio in 2000 and has since worked on various political campaigns in Florida, including U.S. presidential and senate campaigns, as well as Florida State Legislative and Miami-Dade County Commission races.

Active in the local community, Mr. Diaz serves as President of the Board of Directors of Kristi House, the non-profit child sexual abuse agency, which serves as the Children's Advocacy Center for Miami-Dade County. He is also a member of the City of Miami's Historical and Environmental Preservation Board, protecting the City's historical and environmental treasures, and serves on the Alumni Council of the University of Florida, Levin College of Law.
