Mellon Foundation Funds CES Dissertation Completion Fellowships

Twenty Fellowships Worth Almost $30,000 Each Will be Awarded Over Two Years

NEW YORK, Jan. 17, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Council for European Studies (CES) has received a grant of $650,000 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to provide dissertation completion fellowships to late-stage doctoral students in European Studies. The new program—titled the Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowship Program—will facilitate the timely completion of the doctoral degree by providing eligible late-stage European Studies doctoral students in the United States with the necessary assistance and tools to finish their programs, receive their degrees, and successfully acclimate to the post-PhD professional landscape. The new program has been developed in an effort to assist in shortening PhD completion times and perhaps even lessening graduate student attrition, a problem which the Commission on the Future of Graduate Education in the United States has called "one of the most vexing problems facing U.S. graduate education."

Each fellowship includes a $25,000 stipend as well as assistance in securing reimbursements or waivers for up to $3,500 in eligible health insurance and candidacy fees. Moreover, each new Mellon-CES Fellow will benefit from valuable professional development opportunities (such as career-oriented seminars), an invitation to present at the Council's annual International Conference of Europeanists, and the opportunity to publish in the Council's semi-annual online journal, Perspectives on Europe.

The new fellowship program is yet another valuable offering on the Council's already crowded roster of grant, award, and fellowship programs for Europeanists.  The Council now offers financial support and recognition for pre-dissertation students, late-stage doctoral students, and early career professionals through its Pre-Dissertation Fellowship Program, Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowship, European Studies Book Award, Conference Travel Grant Program, and European Studies First Article Prizes.

The application period for the new Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowship will begin on September 3, 2012, with all application materials due by February 4, 2013.  For more information about the new Mellon-CES Dissertation Completion Fellowship Program, visit the Council's website
