PATTY FAYERWEATHER HARLOW:

Environmentally-conscious author says "No Fracking Way" to current support of drill-baby-drill policies

Once you frack, you can't go back! Environmental activist and children's book author Patty Fayerweather Harlow is urging fellow environmentalists to protest hydraulic fracturing across the country, and that means demanding that the practice be banned before another community is forced to grapple with its deadly consequences. Currently, the New York State Department of Conservation (NYSDEC) is preparing an environmental impact statement that will determine the legality of hydraulic fracturing in New York. Pending this report, which was just extended on February 12th for further consideration, Harlow has launched a campaign to mobilize New Yorkers to unite against fracking and demand that Governor Cuomo let the science decide. Proven to cause severe environmental pollution, including contamination of ground water, risk to air quality, and surface contamination from spills and flowback, fracking not only compromises the environment, but the health of individuals who live in and around the areas where it is practiced. A united front is our only hope to force Governor Cuomo and other government officials to listen to the MANY, not the money---for once!

With so much at stake in these environmentally sensitive times, our planet's valuable resources cannot be subjected to a drill-baby-drill platform, nor can our pristine landscapes be preserved with dangerous pipelines of crude oil pumping through them. Harlow is determined to bring awareness to this cause and to see hydraulic fracturing banned in the United States.

Patty Fayerweather Harlow is the author of the book series Rock with Rodney and Party with Perky to Preserve Wildlife, which explores the importance of preserving and protecting our national parks and historic landmarks. Harlow's 5-part book series (with a 6th edition soon to be published), empowers readers to take action in preserving the resources that make America beautiful. Her environmental advocacy began during the anti-environmental Bush era and has been continuous ever since. She is also a recognized poet with the distinction of being selected every year since 1998 to have her work printed in coffee house books through Poetry.com.

KIMBERLY BERG:

Artist rejects patriarchal society and empowers woman to forge new pathway

Kimberly Berg has awakened the ancient goddess! A male feminist artist, Berg's work challenges the patriarchal system that has evolved to dominate our world by exposing it as a system that is not only unworkable and unsustainable, but also unjust. Guided by the prehistoric record, which shows evidence that pre-patriarchal Neolithic societies respected and honored their women, Berg believes that we are approaching the tipping point of patriarchal dominance as women gain the confidence to reclaim their inherent birthright.  And just to be sure a feminist transformation is underway, Berg has heaved the final stones necessary to tip the scale by launching a campaign to educate the public on the history of women's culture and the factors that led to its unfortunate subjugation.

Berg has recently unveiled The Legacy of the Goddess, a power point presentation which outlines the forgotten pre-history of women's culture and highlights the revered role of woman in Neolithic societies.  By bringing his message to classrooms and community centers across the country, Berg hopes to restore the female voice so that she may dance once again into the wind.

Kimberly Berg holds a Bachelor of Science in History from the University of Wisconsin, with a concentration in Ancient History.  He lives a self-sustaining life of voluntary simplicity in a Thoreau-like cabin, surrounded by the trees and wildlife of the Adirondack Mountains. Without electricity and with only a wood burning stove for heat in this sometimes harsh climate, Berg has forged an essential pact with nature and has learned to respect and appreciate the elements of his lifestyle that have become extinct in modern society. His interest in women's advocacy was sparked by a book written by Layne Redmond entitled When Drummers Were Women, which opened his eyes to the historical decline in women's stature and the urgent necessity that both genders work together to restore equality for the greater good of humanity.

DR. BARBARA MORRISON:

Forward thinking educator advocates "back-to-nature" post-partum practices

Dr. Barbara Morrison, an expert in nurse-midwifery and maternal-child nursing, isn't satisfied with the status quo. Her hands-on experience and extensive research have catapulted her to the forefront of health care improvement for newborns and their families and inspired her to revolutionize our current and deeply flawed system. With a focus on health care professionals, Dr. Barb promotes change through education and implementation consulting in the areas of kangaroo (skin-to-skin) care, breastfeeding, the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative, and postpartum environment and care. Supported by her own research, Dr. Barb encourages health care professionals to foster maternal and newborn physical, social and emotional development by placing babies in their optimal habitat, skin-to-skin on their mother's chest, and breastfeeding frequently and exclusively. She is an engaging speaker, a compassionate advocate and a champion of maternal-child health care reform.

Dr. Barbara Morrison, Ph.D., R.N., C.N.M., has nurtured her expertise and passion for evidence-based maternity care through a distinguished education. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the College of Wooster, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Columbia University, a Master of Nursing degree (Primary Health Care/Family Nurse Practitioner) from the University of Washington, and both a Post-Masters Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery and a Doctor of Philosophy (Nurse-Midwifery/Maternal-Child Nursing) from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Dr. Barb researches the influence of interruptions to the breastfeeding dyad on breastfeeding initiation and the effectiveness of education and support strategies with nurses as they change their paradigm of maternal-newborn family-centered care.  Additionally, she has mentored Doctor of Nursing Practice students in their final scholarly projects, for example: evaluating the effectiveness of culturally sensitive teaching on Guatamalan traditional midwives' knowledge of managing postpartum hemorrhage and Botswanian couples' perceptions of group prenatal care. She has been selected to fill the Janice M. Riordan Distinguished Professorship in Maternal and Child Health at Wichita State University, an endowed chair named after a leading expert in breastfeeding. This acknowledgement of her expertise leaves no doubt that her wisdom and passion are unmatched.

Since 1987, Dr. Barb has been sharing her knowledge of maternal-child nursing, theories for nursing and research with undergraduate and graduate students as a professor at several institutions in Illinois, Ohio and now Kansas. Acknowledging that learning continues beyond the classroom, she enjoys challenging and educating health care professionals specializing in birth and post-partum care. Through educational offerings and consulting, Dr. Barb hopes to alter the current trends in maternal-newborn care, and to help re-establish a more nurturing and natural environment for the benefit of all newborns and their families.
