TORONTO, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - April 23, 2013) - April 27th marks the 200th anniversary of the Battle of York. The military and the City of Toronto have partnered to commemorate the battle and planned a number of great events which will be happening this Saturday. There have been several releases on this, posters at TTC shelters and subway stations etc. and another media release will go out later this week from the City of Toronto.

All info on what will be happening this Saturday, including a map of the parade route, can be found at www.toronto.ca/1812/.

Here is an overview of the day in which we'll see His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh at Queen's Park, more than 1,500 sailors and soldiers marching down University Ave and a commemorative ceremony at Fort York National Historic Site:

On Saturday April 27, the City of Toronto and the Canadian Armed Forces will commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of York. Through the day's many events and ceremonies, Torontonians will have an opportunity to remember and honour the sacrifice of those who fought and died on that traumatic day in Toronto's history.

In the morning, the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment will be presented a new Regimental Colour by His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, at the Ontario Legislature Building. After the presentation and consecration of the new Colour, a parade of more than 1,500 sailors and soldiers from the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Army will march from Queen's Park to Fort York National Historic Site. The parade of marching bands, ceremonial uniforms and Regimental Colours will be one of the largest military parades ever organized in Toronto.

After the parade a commemorative ceremony will be held inside the walls of Fort York National Historic Site. Among the participants will be re-enactment units in War of 1812 uniforms, First Nations, and sailors and soldiers of the Canadian Forces who serve in Toronto today.

Note: His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh has been the Colonel-in-Chief of The Royal Canadian Regiment since December 1953. Regimental Colours are a kind of ceremonial flag which, historically, provided a rallying point for troops on the battlefield, and which today remind soldiers of their unit's history. They are the most prized possession of every infantry unit.
