Death of an Inmate from the Special Handling Unit


SAINTE-ANNE-DES-PLAINES, QUEBEC--(Marketwired - Aug. 7, 2013) - On August 4, 2013, Cain Eli Merasty, an inmate from the Special Handling Unit, a maximum security federal institution, was found unresponsive in his cell. Institutional staff immediately performed CPR and paramedics were called.

The inmate was taken to l'Hôpital régional de St-Jérôme, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:45 p.m., on August 5, 2013.

At the time of his death, Mr. Merasty, 34, was serving an indeterminate sentence for Second Degree Murder. His sentence had commenced on December 8, 1998.

Next of kin have been notified.

As in all cases where an individual dies while in custody, the police and coroner have been notified. In addition, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
