Photo Release -- New Home for Big Tex

Not Just a White Picket Fence

DALLAS, Sept. 18, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Big Tex will rise from the ashes September 27, opening day of the 2013 State Fair of Texas. Reclaiming his position atop a massive mound in front of the landmark Tower Building and gateway to the midway, Big Tex will be surrounded by super graphics that tell his life story.

Nottestad & Co., a Dallas graphic design firm, is designing the exhibit for The State Fair of Texas in collaboration with landscape architect Studio Outside. They redesigned Big Tex Circle to welcome fair-goers and accommodate the challenging requirements of temporarily housing a 55-foot statue of a cowboy.

"Big Texas has a story to tell, and we are bringing it to life," says Dean Nottestad, designer for Nottestad & Co. "People underestimate Big Tex's fans and their Texas-size love for him," Mr. Nottestad said. "We are giving his fans more of what they love about the big guy," he adds. Big Tex has a Facebook page with 16,000 likes.

According to Andrew Duggan, landscape architect with Studio Outside, Fair Park is a registered historical landmark so permanent construction must be integrated into the landscape of Fair Park buildings. Mr. Duggan said, "We carefully chose the materials and forms to craft a suitable home for Big Tex while not competing with the integrity of the Fair Park experience. The beauty of the design is its simplicity as it celebrates the legacy of this treasured Landmark District in Dallas."

The design includes a perimeter wall complementing the Art-Deco architecture and anchors the base of the mound. "Plantings feature bands of texture and color for year-round interest, but especially during the fair," said Mr. Duggan. "The new circle is sure to re-establish itself as the favorite meeting place for fair-goers," he added.

According to Sandra Nottestad, president, Nottestad & Co., the large photo exhibit will pay tribute to Big Tex and provide photo opportunities. She said, "The gallery consists of six 3 x 5 foot panels picturing historical moments from the past 60 years (devastating 2012 fire not included)." She added, "The panels provide great backdrops for people to pose for their State Fair of Texas photos as they have for generations."
