Lubrizol to Highlight New Medical Grade Flame-Retardant Polymer Technology at MedTec China
The first thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) to successfully combine high flame properties, low halogen content and softness
SHANGHAI and CLEVELAND, September 20, 2013 - The Lubrizol Corporation will feature its new medical grade flame-retardant polymer technology during the MedTec China show September 25-26 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. Developed by Lubrizol LifeScience Polymers, this product is the first thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) of its kind to combine high flame properties with low halogen content and a rubber-like softness.
Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) is the minimum concentration of oxygen that will support combustion of a polymer - a critical consideration in medical applications. With an LOI of 30, this new TPU product demonstrates excellent flame retardancy to help prevent ignition and flame propagation. It also exhibits low smoke and low toxicity, making it suitable for an array of applications that include medical devices and cables.
A soft, rubber-like flexibility also sets this new product apart from other flame-retardant materials. It is available with a matte or gloss finish. Color choices include natural, black and custom. Finally, it can be processed in a variety of ways, including common injection molding and extrusion methods.
