Chicago, IL, Nov. 11, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Department of College and Career Preparation in partnership with the Building Technologies Division of Siemens Industry, Inc. and its Sustainability Education Program is once again offering local high school seniors the opportunity to connect with the admissions personnel and be awarded scholarships from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) from all over the country.

The unique day-long event allows CPS seniors who have met specific academic requirements to meet face to face with representatives from schools that they might not otherwise consider because they're either out of state or perceived as beyond their financial means. The travel expenses alone can prevent students and their families from visiting these institutions in person. Similarly, the admissions staffs of these venerable institutions are faced with budgetary concerns that prevent them from traveling and reaching out to prospective students in the north. After meeting with HBCU representatives, students who qualify and have been selected for scholarships are invited back to an award reception later that night where they receive their rewards. Last year, $38 million in scholarships were handed out.
By hosting this event for the last 10 years, Siemens has helped HBCUs award over $200 million in scholarships to students in Chicago and created access to high quality, higher education opportunities that did not exist before. "Siemens recognized a situation where our support and positive intervention could really help less privileged students rise above challenges. With the HBCU event, we help CPS students move past geographic and financial barriers," said Nichelle Grant, Siemens Building Technologies.
