Public Service Announcement-The Ontario SPCA Reminds Animal Owners of the Dangers of Melting Ice and Puddles

NEWMARKET, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Jan. 15, 2014) - The Ontario SPCA would like to remind animal owners of the dangers of melting ice and puddles.

With temperatures beginning to increase, there will be a lot of melting ice and puddles throughout Ontario. These puddles are filled with chemicals and salt which can be extremely dangerous to pets if ingested.

Unfortunately, there are some instances where anti-freeze is used in conjunction with salt as a de-icing method. The Society strongly discourages the use of anti-freeze in this way as it can cause serious harm to pets, including death.

There is an increase danger for melting ice on lakes, rivers, creeks and streams that poses a huge danger to animals at large. We need to keep our pets safe and in care and control at all times.

"Pet owners need to be extremely vigilant with their pets around melting ice and water when temperatures start to increase," says Connie Mallory, Chief Inspector. "These pose a significant health and safety danger to our pets."

In the event you suspect that your pet may have ingested harmful chemicals, contact your local veterinarian immediately.
