Annual Christopher Awards gala honors creators of TV/cable programming, feature films, and books for adults & young people that affirm the highest values of the human spirit

New York, March 19, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- (http://www.myprgenie.com) -- The Christophers announced that the 65th annual Christopher Awards ceremony will be held in New York City on Thursday evening, May 15, 2014. The Christopher Awards salute media projects that remind viewers and readers, young and old, of their individual potential to positively influence our world.

To date, nearly 1,500 producers, writers, directors, authors and illustrators have won Christopher Awards since the program began in 1949.

"The opportunity to celebrate some of the best projects in film, television and publishing every year is a necessary reminder to those of us at The Christophers-and to everyone-that the human spirit can survive through great struggles and accomplish incredible things," said Tony Rossi, Director of Communications for The Christophers. "If your faith in humanity ever hits bottom, just look to some Christopher Award-winning projects to restore your hope."

Recent winners include "Lincoln," "Les Miserables," "The Help," "The King's Speech," and "Up" in the Film category; "American Experience: Freedom Riders," "Call the Midwife," and "God is the Bigger Elvis" in the TV/Cable category; "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand, "A Good Man" by Mark Shriver and "Fearless" by Eric Blehm in the Books for Adults category; and "Forever You" by Nicole Lataif, "The One and Only Ivan" by Katherine Applegate, and "Outcasts United" by Warren St. John in the Books for Young People category.

The Christophers, a nonprofit organization founded in 1945 by Maryknoll Father James Keller, is rooted in the Judeo-Christian tradition of service to God and humanity. The ancient Chinese proverb-"It's better to light one candle than to curse the darkness"- guides its publishing, radio, leadership and awards programs.
