Lenox Hill Doctor Performs Testicular Cancer Exams Live on National TV

New York, Nov. 24, 2014 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Lenox Hill Hospital's Chairman of Urology, David B. Samadi, MD, performed live on-air testicular cancer screenings Friday morning on two Today Show co-hosts, Willie Geist and Carson Daly, to help raise awareness about the disease that has been estimated to affect nearly 9,000 men this year.

The screenings, performed back-to-back in a private room with a live microphone, took less than a minute each and produced a clean bill of health for both co-hosts. As he performed the painless exams, Dr. Samadi explained that men should look for changes in size and texture of the testicles, and for any unusual lumps or nodules.

Dr. Samadi, a strong proponent of early detection, stressed the importance of monthly self-examination for all men ages 20 to 40, as testicular cancer may often be asymptomatic.

"One person every 24 hours is diagnosed with testicular cancer and that simple test can truly save lives," he said. If discovered in the early stages, testicular cancer has a 95% survival rate.

The doctor also urged women to encourage the men in their life to get various potentially life-saving cancer screenings. He launched the #SamadiChallenge earlier this year enlisting women to help raise awareness about prostate cancer symptoms, importance or early diagnosis and treatment options.
