CAMBRIDGE, Ontario, Jan. 16, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The City of North Battleford, Saskatchewan is pleased to announce that it is the first municipality in Western Canada to adopt and successfully implement advanced, award-winning biosolids management solutions developed by Cambridge, Ontario based Lystek International Inc. The project was commissioned on budget and ahead of schedule.
Stewart Schafer, the City of North Battleford's Director of Operations stated "Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) biosolids should be considered a resource and not a liability." Mr. Schafer continues by saying that converting the biosolids into a commercial fertilizer that is high in organic matter is a win-win for both the City and local farmers."
In 2013, North Battleford had been mandated by the Water Security Agency to have a new biosolids management solution in place by no later than November of 2015. At the time, the City was burying the biosolids in the landfill, which was presenting other problems. Through a competitive request-for-proposals process, the City selected the Lystek system as it was easy to retrofit into the existing plant using a proven, thermal hydrolysis technology.
Mr. Schafer stated that Lystek was ultimately chosen because it:
- Was deemed to be the most fiscally and environmentally-responsible option.
- Exceeded the city's requirements for a proven, year-round management program.
- Allows the city to divert biosolids from its landfill and convert them into a nutrient-rich, Class A quality fertilizer registered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency that can generate revenue and help offset costs.
- Was compact enough to be easily retrofitted into the city's existing plant with little to no disruption to existing infrastructure and/or operations.
- Did not require any additional staff to be hired or special skills to operate.

The Project:
The integration of Lystek International technology into the City of North Battleford's wastewater treatment facility was completed in 2014, a full year ahead of the deadline for a solution, as required by the Water Security Agency.
With the completion of this project, North Battleford becomes the first municipality in Western Canada to produce a saleable, CFIA-registered, liquid fertilizer, and joins a growing list of other municipalities that have adopted this system.
As part of the agreement, Lystek also provides a range of value-added services, such as operational support and product sales, which includes a unique, revenue-sharing agreement that is expected to grow over time.
