Canada's Renewable Fuels Association Celebrates Earth Day

Aylmer, Ontario, CANADA

OTTAWA, ON--(Marketwired - April 22, 2015) - The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) is proud to support Earth Day.

"For Canada's renewable fuels industry, every day is Earth Day," said CRFA President Andrea Kent. "CRFA members have been at the forefront of environmental leadership for over thirty years and are proud to be such an important part of reducing Canada's greenhouse gas emissions. Biofuels are the cleanest and most sustainable source of fuel available. Increasing domestic production and use of renewable fuels will mean even more environmental benefits and ensure Canada is greener for generations to come."

Quick Facts:

  • Renewable fuels like ethanol and renewable diesel reduce GHGs by as much as 99% compared to fossil fuels.
  • Every year Canada's biofuels industry generates $3.5 billion in economic activity while removing 4.2 megatons of carbon from the environment -- the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off the road annually.
  • Ethanol helps consumers save money at the fuel pump. In 2013, the wholesale price of ethanol was on average 20 cents per litre lower than the wholesale price of gasoline.
  • Biodiesel can be used in all diesel vehicles with few or no modifications.
  • Canada now has sufficient domestic production to meet the requirements of the federal 2% renewable diesel mandate. Moving to 5% renewables in the diesel pool would increase GHG emission reductions by 2.5MT a year.
  • Canada's biofuels industry continues to grow, improve and innovate. Today technology exists to make biofuel from agricultural waste, residues, and even garbage.

Canada's renewable fuels standards remain the single most effective policy tool for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions within the transportation sector while stimulating the economy. CRFA applauds all levels of government in their support of biofuels. We look forward to continuing to work together, ensuring Canadians can enjoy a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous environment today and well into the future.
