Mitchell Examines Top 10 Medical Procedure Codes Across 50 States

Latest Industry Trends Report Assesses 2015 National Claims Data and Highlights Regional Disparities

SAN DIEGO, CA--(Marketwired - May 19, 2015) - Mitchell, a leading provider of technology, connectivity and information solutions to the Property & Casualty (P&C) claims and Collision Repair industries, has published its Industry Trends Report (ITR) for the second quarter of 2015. The report evaluates the latest industry trends and data to help P&C insurers, bill reviewers, payers and auto body repair shops navigate the current market.

In the ITR, Edward Olsen, Senior Business Process Consultant at Mitchell, examines the top 10 procedure codes reported across the nation for first-party claims comparing and contrasting differences by state. These codes make up a significant portion of the medical services encountered in auto casualty claims. As a result, changes in the manner in which these services are utilized and billed can impact the overall claim outcome performance of a state. Regulatory changes, such as the implementation of a fee schedule which drives the care provided, can also affect these codes.

The top 10 procedure codes in Oregon make up nearly 48 percent of total charges, while New York has a greater diversity of service with the top 10 procedure codes only accounting for 10 percent of total charges. Oregon exceeds the national average for units of massage therapy with 37 percent of all units billed coming from massage whereas the national average is 9 percent. In addition, the national average unit cost for massage therapy is $30.70, while Oregon charges nearly 35 percent more.

"You can look at these codes like the state's fingerprint; while there are many similarities there are also subtle differences," said Edward Olsen, DC, CPCU, Senior Business Process Consultant at Mitchell. "These subtle differences, once identified, could focus claim handling procedures on relevant concerns within the state."

First published in April 2001, Mitchell's ITR reaches more than 33,000 collision and casualty industry professionals and provides meaningful visibility into data-driven trends in the P&C market. The complete report is available at http://www.mitchell.com/industry-trends-report
