LeadingAge NJ Joins US Representatives and Over 2,500 Organizations to Avoid Fiscal Meltdown, End Sequestration, Before October 1st Deadline

NDD United to Urge Congress to Raise Spending Caps, Invest in Early Childhood Education, Law Enforcement, and Veterans

PRINCETON, N.J., Sept. 10, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- LeadingAge along with LeadingAge NJ joins forces today with Reps. Chris Van Hollen (MD-08), Rosa DeLauro (CT-03), and Barbara Lee (CA-13) and other advocates representing more than 2,500 national, state and local organizations for veterans, teachers, scientists, law enforcement, women's rights, transportation safety, and others to call for Congress to avoid America's next great budget crisis. A letter signed by the organizations will be presented to Congress during a press conference at the House Triangle today in Washington, DC, at 11am.

With the bi-partisan Murray-Ryan deal set to expire on October 1st, nondefense discretionary (NDD) programs—ranging from education and job training, to housing and science, to natural resources and veterans services, to public health, safety and security—are once again on a crash course to disaster as the true impact of sequestration will be felt by millions of Americans from all walks of life.

"This threat to the core functions of our national government is a threat to quality aging services in NJ," noted Michele Kent, President and CEO of LeadingAge NJ.

Leaders of NDD United will present a letter signed by more than 2,500 groups to Congressional leaders and Committee members demanding Congress raise the spending caps and end sequestration through a bipartisan budget deal. A deal would prevent drastic cuts to women's health, early education, transportation safety, law enforcement, veterans, and other important sectors. NDD advocates will discuss some of the critical cuts our country will face if no deal is reached on the budget.
