Battelle Joins Forces With Industry Expert SMT to Advance Anti-Counterfeit and Anti-Clone Chip Technology

Relationship to Focus on Commercializing Battelle Barricade(TM)

COLUMBUS, OH--(Marketwired - October 01, 2015) - As part of an alliance agreement announced today, recognized industry leader in the detection of advanced counterfeit and clone electronic components, SMT Corporation will make its vast array of advanced counterfeit devices available to developmental testing of Battelle's Barricade™ technology.

Barricade™ enables nondestructive verification of 100 percent of components for pennies per part at throughputs of seconds per part without integrated circuit design modifications, physical alterations to existing inventory, or any changes to electronic component manufacturing processes.

"By combining forces and having access to SMT's unique inventory of advanced counterfeit and clone device test samples, we are moving beyond the research and development phase towards a real-world, scalable test solution," said Stylianos Kaminaris, Director of Cyber Product Development with Battelle's Cyber Innovations group.

Barricade™ uses a low-cost hardware/software platform to collect, analyze, and classify the power consumption waveform from each component. The platform enables deploying Barricade™to any trusted user site and can be automated for high-throughput applications.

Applicable to both analog and digital devices, Barricade™ determines authenticity based on electrical signatures and a classification algorithm that creates feature vectors for each class of chips in a given class of authentic, counterfeit or cloned devices. Only a few identical devices are necessary to enroll an entire class of chips into the system. The process can be performed at any point in the supply chain to greatly reduce the risk of counterfeit/clone component entry as well as to address new regulations that may arise for anti-counterfeiting.

"We are excited to partner with Battelle in advancing their Barricade™ technology to protect government supply chains and the semi-conductor industry," said Tom Sharpe, vice-president of SMT. "Consistently detecting advanced counterfeit and cloned devices is an escalating threat that some of the best minds are trying to solve. SMT hopes providing our specialized part and test data will help greatly accelerate the development and deployment of this very promising test system to industry."
