One Horizon Enables Network Operators to Offer 'Roam Like Home' Solution to Subscribers

Today, travelers abroad or roamers do not have many affordable options to call home. They are typically being charged significant call-price premiums from their carrier. These charges may range 300% to over 1000% per minute of the traditional in-country cost. Alternatively, roamers are forced to utilize Over-the-Top (OTT) services such as Skype or an app-to-app OTT such as WhatsApp. In each instance the user is required to utilize Wi-Fi and/or make sure the receiver has the same application. For the consumer, engagement can only be scheduled when Wi-Fi is available and often times the quality of the call is not optimal. For the carrier, incremental roaming revenue is lost to OTT service competitors.

Roaming internet fees are significantly lower than roaming voice fees. By combining One Horizon's patented low data usage Voice over IP (VoIP) smartphone application with low inter-operator data roaming rates, network operators can now compete on price with OTT services for roaming voice calls while maintaining a healthy profit margin, especially for roaming calls home for the operators own subscribers.

Economics:
Settlement with the local network operator is approximately $0.10/megabyte. Because One Horizon's patented VoIP application consumes 5x to 17x less mobile data per call as compared to OTT VoIP solutions, the application will deliver 15 minutes of talking time per megabyte, thereby costing the home network just $0.0066/roaming minute. The operator's home rate plus $0.0066 will now allow the consumer to 'Roam Like Home' for the first time.

'Roam Like Home' Live in the Philippines:
This service went live with the Philippines leading mobile network operator, Smart Communications Inc., and branded Smart Roamer (http://smart.com.ph/smartroamer). Their subscribers simply perform a mobile top up on their prepaid subscription as normal, turn on [controlled] data roaming and then call home using their smartphone app over roaming data when they are abroad at a fraction of cost of a roaming voice minute and not much higher than the price of a local call.
