Two world records set on Mondotrack/WS at Rio Olympic Games

Numerous national records and personal bests also set

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, Aug. 15, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Two more *world records have been set on a track made by Mondo, the global leader in the sport flooring market. At the Rio Olympics, Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana and South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk set new world records on Mondotrack/WS, the competition track of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

On Friday, in the women’s 10,000 meter final, which was the first athletics final of the Rio Games, Ayana set a new world record of 29:17.45. In addition, national records by Burundi, Ethiopia, Greece, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Sweden, the United States and Uzbekistan fell, and 18 personal bests were set by athletes of 12 different nations during that race.

And on Sunday, van Niekerk established a new world record in the men's 400 meter final, clocking a stunning 43.03, which shaved 0.15 seconds off the record American Michael Johnson set at the 1999 IAAF World Championships.

Mondotrack/WS is the new, faster version of Mondotrack, the competition surface of the London 2012 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. Specifically designed for superior athletic performance, Mondotrack/WS features Mondo’s 2-Phase Vulcanization wear layer, which provides a significant increase in the elastic response of the surface and ensures uniformity of dynamic response over the whole track. Mondotrack/WS’ 3D Omni-Directional Tessellation guarantees excellent grip in wet and dry conditions, and its diamond air-cell patented technology delivers the perfect combination of cushioning, energy storage and energy return, as well as optimum support for foot movements.

More than 260 world records have been set on tracks made by Mondo, including three at the 2012 London Games and five at the 2008 Beijing Games.
