Union Hospital Secures Clinical Workflows and Drives Cost Savings with Nuance Solutions

Nuance Solutions Advances HIMSS EHR Adoption Model for Union Hospital

Burlington, May 31, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BURLINGTON, Mass., May 31, 2017Nuance Communications, Inc. today announced Union Hospital has deployed Nuance solutions to improve clinical workflows for capturing and printing information. The initiative delivered increased information security in how the hospital manages and distributes electronic and paper documents, and cost savings by reducing printers and fax machines throughout the institution.

Union Hospital deployed Nuance Output Manager print management software and Nuance AutoStore document and data capture software to streamline workflows and enable more secure printing. Nuance solutions provide hospital staff with a secure print release, authorization and authentication process that prevents protected health information (PHI) from being seen by unauthorized individuals. This allows staff to print at any of the hospital’s networked connected printers, delivering information where it is needed.

“We take patient confidentiality extremely seriously, and anything we can do to protect our community and patient information is a priority for us,” said Anne Lara, senior vice president, chief innovation officer at Union Hospital, an award-winning, full-service community hospital located in Elkton, Md. “Nuance solutions assisted us with our HIPAA compliance by providing a chain of custody for our printing which helped secure patient information and other sensitive material.”

Nuance Output Manager and AutoStore supported printer and fax consolidation, and a move to multifunction printers (MFPs) – reducing device costs for Union Hospital. Clinicians now have an efficient, one-stop shop for printed materials and faxes, allowing them to have more time for patient care.

Reaching Higher Levels of HIMSS and Patient Care

Like most healthcare organizations, Union Hospital wants to move further in the HIMSS stages, which define the maturity of technology adoption and paperless healthcare leading to increased quality of care and reimbursements. With use of Nuance Output Manager, AutoStore and Nuance Dragon software, the hospital achieved HIMSS Stage 6. As the organization continues to roll out Nuance technology, Union Hospital is targeting end of 2017 to hit HIMSS Stage 7, the highest level of EHR adoption.
