Women’s Choice Award® Announces 2017 America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care

Shares Top Three Criteria for Finding Quality Cancer Care

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla., Sept. 19, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Women’s Choice Award®, America’s trusted referral source for the best in healthcare, has announced its 2017 America’s Best Hospitals for Cancer Care. The 412 award recipients have met the highest standards for cancer care in the U.S. by the Women’s Choice Award based on robust criteria that consider clinical excellence and female patient satisfaction.

According to a Women’s Choice Award survey, nearly two-thirds of women will do their own research versus letting a doctor choose a hospital for their cancer care.  The Women’s Choice Award uses the following top criteria for recognizing the best hospitals for cancer care, which women can use when assessing their own community hospitals:

  1. Ensure the hospital is accredited by the Commission on Cancer, a program of the American College of Surgeons.   Accreditation required for the award ensures that a hospital or facility offers a full range of diagnostic and treatment services, or provides integrated cancer care and comprehensive services.  Accreditation also signifies that the facility participates in cancer-related clinical research.

  2. Look for low infection rates.  Low infection rates compared to the national average are another important measure utilized by the Women’s Choice Award.  Oncology patients are more susceptible than other patients to hospital-acquired infections because of their compromised immune systems.

  3. View patient recommendation ratings.  The Woman’s Choice Award utilizes the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) Survey as part of its award methodology.

The Women’s Choice Award also measures hospitals on the presence of specific cancer-related services offered onsite.  The award is the only hospital cancer center ranking that includes primary research about women’s healthcare preferences as women make or influence 94% of all healthcare decisions for themselves and others.

“The very first step on a cancer journey is determining where to go for care,” said Delia Passi, founder and CEO of the Women’s Choice Award and a breast cancer survivor.  “We’re empowering women to make confident decisions about the best hospital cancer centers for themselves and their loved ones.  We help them make smart, informed choices during a stressful time.”
