Recycling depot collecting donations for Vancouver Binners

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, July 24, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- From June 15 to August 17, Regional Recycling is accepting beverage container and clothing donations for their Gift of Warmth: Summer Edition event.

“Our Vancouver depot services a high number of ‘Binners’—people who make their living from pulling recyclable materials from the garbage and returning them to us for their deposit refunds,” said Vancouver General Manager Jason Smith.

On August 18, Regional Recycling is holding a free public barbeque where Binners can enjoy all-beef hot dogs and fresh fruit, stock up on summer clothing and purchase a haircut by bringing in beverage containers.

Many of the people who are considered Binners are from at-risk populations. Often the money made from returning beverage containers doesn’t cover basic necessities.

Regional Recycling’s event is an attempt to support this group of customers beyond the hot coffee and gift certificates they already provide.

“These individuals do a great service for the community and for our environment,” said Smith. “They go through other people’s trash to make sure items that shouldn’t end up in landfills are returned to the recycling loop.”

Until August 17, Regional Recycling Vancouver depot will collect personal care items like new adult socks and underwear and gently used shoes and boots, shirts, pants and hats.

A refundable beverage container donation bin is also available at the depot so people can donate their beverage containers to provide funds for the event.

On August 18, everyone is welcome to join Regional Recycling and their partners to distribute the donated items and invited to enjoy the free public barbeque. Fresh fruit will be provided by SPUD and haircuts will be provided by the Vancouver Community College Barber program. The Binner's Project, Mission Possible and Working Gear will also be supporting this event.

Located at 960 Evans Avenue, donations are now being accepted. Between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. drop off new or gently used clothing or donate beverage containers towards the event. For more information contact Jason Smith at jason.smith@regionalrecycling.ca or 604.861.6499
