Former Hercules Offshore and HERO Liquidating Trust Associate GC and CCO Joins King & Spalding in Houston

HOUSTON, Dec. 11, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- King & Spalding today announced that William “Bill” Gordon, former associate general counsel and chief compliance officer at Hercules Offshore and HERO Liquidating Trust, has joined as a partner in the firm’s Trial and Global Disputes practice group in the Houston office.

At Hercules, a Houston-based, global oil services and drilling company with 3,000 employees, Gordon oversaw the company’s compliance and litigation functions. His role included business strategy, risk management, corporate restructuring, and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) reporting.

“Bill is skilled in guiding senior leaders and boards through challenging legal, regulatory and policy issues at all phases of the business lifecycle,” said Andy Bayman, leader of King & Spalding’s Trial & Global Disputes practice group. “Bill’s experience, his leadership roles and his contacts at government enforcement agencies enhance our ability to help our clients with disputes, investigations and transactions in the private equity, insurance and energy sectors.”

Gordon oversaw numerous transactions, financings, mergers and acquisitions at Hercules, including a $1.2 billion debt equity swap, a $600 million restructuring support agreement, $200 million in global asset sales, and multiple joint venture agreements with partners across the globe. He also handled litigation and arbitration for insurance matters, commercial disputes, labor and employment issues, environmental claims and shareholder derivative suits. Gordon also brings deep expertise in complex corporate restructurings, including legal and tax issues.

“Bill is known for adeptly navigating and negotiating corporate restructuring and financing matters and influencing major decisions with sound and strategic judgment,” said Tracie Renfroe, managing partner of the firm’s Houston office and co-head of the Energy practice. “His ability to address complex issues for multinational companies makes him a great resource for our general counsel clients who are faced with these risks.”

Before going in-house with Hercules in 2014, Gordon spent seven years in the international, regulatory, and compliance group at Steptoe & Johnson in Washington, D.C. He represented multinational and government clients in cross-border criminal, civil, and administrative proceedings involving the U.S. Department of Justice, the SEC, the World Bank, and the Inter-American Development Bank, among other regulatory bodies.

Gordon received his law degree from Harvard Law School and his undergraduate degree from Pomona College.

“My new colleagues are well known for their creativity and for championing their clients through the most challenging legal and business issues,” Gordon said. “I’m looking forward to working with them to navigate clients through sensitive litigation, regulatory, enforcement, and transactional issues around the world.”
