Time for a Check-Up: Digital Healthcare Entrepreneurs to Share Insights into Building Thriving Start-Ups

MIT Enterprise Forum Cambridge to host interactive session, Finding a “Healthy” Problem to Solve

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 23, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Entrepreneurs are driven by passion. What makes them successful business leaders, though, is identifying critical unmet needs and then develop compelling products and services to address them.

On Tuesday, May 14, the MIT Enterprise Forum (MITEF) Cambridge will host Finding a “Healthy” Problem to Solve to delve into these dynamics. Moderated by Paola Abello, Director of Innovation at the Center for Primary Care, Harvard Medical School, the evening will feature a pair of digital healthcare entrepreneurs at different stages of their startup journeys to share their stories:

  • Sterling Lanier, CEO, Tonic Health, a west coast-based serial entrepreneur whose company provides Tonic, real-time mobile data collection and payments platform to deliver a seamless, easy and engaging way for patients to fill out any survey, sign any consent form or make any payment when and where it’s most convenient for them. Tonic is used by 15 of the Top 30 health systems in the United States and is Apple's mobility partner for patient data collection.

  • Akshaya Shanmugam, Co-founder & CEO, Lumme Labs, whose startup is developing a cutting-edge addiction treatment platform by combining wearable technology, machine learning and behavioral psychology. She recently told Forbes that her company was formed with the goal to develop technology to address the top three addiction treatment challenges: access, affordability and effectiveness. Lumme is funded by multiple Small Business Innovation Research grants from the National Cancer Institute, National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

Addressing their respective motivations and approaches to founding a company within the healthcare industry, discussion topics will include:

  • How to engage hospitals and healthcare systems to help solve meaningful problems.
  • How an accelerator can benefit a startup team and/or product.
  • How patient satisfaction and health outcomes can drive success and scale.
  • What it takes to successfully integrate with larger digital health products.

“Startups are fueled by the tireless individuals or teams driving them,” said MITEF Cambridge Executive Director Katja Wald. “But, the key to business success is focusing that energy and emotion on identifying and then tackling real-world problems associated with sizable, sustainable market opportunities. Healthcare represents a rapidly changing industry characterized by new or evolving needs along with innovations in business models and technologies to address them. We look forward to Paola, Akshaya and Sterling providing their observations, insights and advice.”
