Wilmington, DE, Sept. 01, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Apache Software Foundation (The ASF), the global home of open source software the world relies on, today released its annual report for the 2026 fiscal year that ended April 30, 2026. The report is now available to download.
"The ASF continues to invest in the infrastructure, tools, standards, and people needed to sustain open source for the long term,” said Ruth Suehle, ASF President. “From reaching our 10,000th committer and developing trusted release infrastructure to launching our Responsible AI Initiative, this fiscal year underscored the resilience of our ‘community over code’ ethos.”
Highlights from FY2026:
- The ASF welcomed its 10,000th committer, reaching 10,225 committers working across 302 projects by the end of FY26. The milestone reflects the continued growth of the ASF's global contributor community and its commitment to mentorship, collaboration, consensus-building, and long-term stewardship.
- The ASF advanced Apache Trusted Releases (ATR) as part of its Tooling Initiative to modernize and strengthen the software release process. During FY26, multiple ASF projects participated in the second alpha phase, testing capabilities including automated policy checks, release vote management, artifact verification, signatures, checksums, Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs), and release attestations.
- The ASF launched the $10 million Responsible AI Initiative to strengthen the open source technologies, governance practices, and community infrastructure underlying AI and machine learning. The initiative received initial support from Anthropic, which contributed $1.5 million, and Alpha-Omega, which contributed an additional $250,000 focused on sustainable open source security.
- ASF contributors advanced international standards for software supply chain transparency, including CycloneDX, Package-URL, and Common Lifecycle Enumeration (CLE), while also supporting adoption of Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange (VEX) practices and tooling.
- Eleven projects graduated to become Apache Top-Level Projects including Apache StormCrawler, Apache Gravitino, Apache DevLake, Apache Grails®, Apache Fory™, Apache HertzBeat, Apache Teaclave™, Apache Training, Apache Artemis, Apache Wayang™, and Apache HugeGraph.
- The ASF continued to grow its pipeline of new open source communities welcoming 10 new podlings to the Apache Incubator. The 28 incubating projects span areas including data lakehouses, graph databases, distributed messaging, workflow orchestration, AI agent frameworks, and security tooling.
