Nokia launches All-IP Core for 3G networks – an industry first based on IPv6

Nokia today introduces its revolutionary concept for IP based 3G core networks, the Nokia 3G All-IP Core, based on IPv6. Nokia is leading the development of 3G mobile systems, and is committed to be first with the implementation of an All-IP core solution in 2002.

The Nokia All-IP core can be connected to major radio and data network standards, enabling a secure, complete, future proof end to end network for 3G Mobile Multimedia. Based on a revolutionary path from current GPRS packet core and GSM circuit switched core, the Nokia All-IP core will support IPv6, required to cater for the hundreds of millions of users of the Mobile Internet, and to establish proper quality of service and security in IP networks.

"The Nokia 3G All-IP Core is targeted to support major radio access standards, blurring the difference between the fixed and mobile network for the end-user. This is possible by combining the carrier class know-how Nokia has with the most advanced IP architecture, says Lauri Melamies, Senior Vice President, Network Systems, Nokia Networks. "Today, voice is probably bringing in 95 percent of mobile operators' revenues. We believe that by 2005, Mobile Internet services will account for roughly 60 percent of the total revenues."

Nokia has been driving the standardisation towards 3rd generation networks and is committed to be the first supplier to deliver a complete 3GPP standard compliant All-IP commercial solution. Nokia's commitment to open interfaces and therefore true freedom of choice and competition is shown in the company's determination to drive the open Iu interface and IPv6 and to be adopted in 3G mobile networks.

Earlier this year, Nokia introduced its IP-RAN concept for advanced radio access, and together the All-IP core and IP-RAN will form an end-to-end mobile All-IP network for ubiquitous 3G services.

The Nokia 3G All-IP core will reduce capital and operational costs through cost-competitive architecture offering improvements in service creation over existing circuit switched solutions, as those traditional solutions will not meet the requirements for creating and facilitating advanced 3G services. An All-IP core for future 3G services is critical as it supports and enables packet data transmission in the network, giving the capability for a range of new IP-based services to be delivered to future terminals as well as bringing faster data speeds, and smooth interactivity with Internet services.
