Jaakko Pöyry Group appointed main engineering consultant for Jämsänkoski power plant

Electrowatt-Ekono Oy, which is a member of the Jaakko Pöyry Group’s Energy business group, has been appointed main engineering consultant for the industrial power plant to be built at UPM-Kymmene’s Jämsänkoski mill. The engineering assignment comprises e.g. architectural, civil, mechanical, process, electrical and automation design, and also procurement services for the project. Other Jaakko Pöyry Group companies participating in the project include JP-Kakko Oy, JP-Talotekniikka Oy and Jaakko Pöyry Oy.

The power plant investment consists of a solid fuel-fired boiler, with a steam output of 185 MW and a new steam turbine with an electricity output of about 50 MW. The new plant replaces two old boilers, one of which will remain as a back-up unit. The total value of the investment is about EUR 65 million. Following the investment project, the mill’s emissions of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen will be significantly reduced. The use of wood-based fuels will increase notably from its present level.

The project is already in progress and the new plant is scheduled to be taken into use in spring 2002.
