Nokia to Supply Its Broadband IP Access Solution to KPNQwest For The French ART Trial

Nokia and KPNQwest France today announced the signature of an agreement for the supply of Nokia’s Broadband IP Access solution to KPNQwest France, the French branch of the leading pan-European Internet data communications company.

The equipment will be used by KPNQwest for the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) trial organised by the French Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications (ART). The objective of this trial is to evaluate the performance of DSL technology and the co-operation between access providers, as the so-called ‘local loop’ is unbundled.

As part of the agreement, Nokia will supply its two-stage DSLAM platform, which will give KPNQwest the ability to provide customers with high-speed Asymmetric DSL services. With this technology, users will be able to get access not only to speeds up to 2 Mbit/s compared to traditional dial-up modems, but also access to new, exciting services such as high-speed remote data access, streaming media for webcasts, hosted applications and interactive video.

This agreement follows a previously announced pan-European contract between Nokia and KPNQwest for the supply of Nokia's Broadband IP Access solution throughout Europe. KPNQwest will deploy the Nokia platform for commercial service in France starting January 2001.

"This agreement oultines the long term relationship between Nokia and KPNQwest France" said Eric Joulié, General Manager of KPNQwest France. "We appreciate the synergies between Nokia’s teams and ours. Nokia's proactiveness and vision in the DSL field will contribute to our success in the high-speed Internet access market".

"Nokia is proud to support KPNQwest during the DSL trials in France" said Paul-Henri Ferrand, Area General Manager of Nokia France and North-West Africa. "This partnership with KPNQwest proves the leading position of our Broadband IP Access solution in the market place and its ability to address needs of new competitors in the local loop."
