Nokia Today Brings High-Speed Mobility to Small Businesses

Nokia has unveiled the latest in its integrated gateway products bringing together high-speed internet access and wireless mobility, two cornerstones of the Mobile Information Society. Nokia integrates SDSL (Symmetrical DSL) and Wireless LAN technologies to create a highly cost-effective single solution for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and professional remote workers in small home offices.

Located at the end-user premises, Nokia MW1642 provides a high-speed, always-on symmetrical (SDSL) network connection, enabling the simultaneous sending and receiving of data. For the local network, both 10Base-T Ethernet and wireless LAN interfaces are supported. The MW1642 can be used as a bridge or a router depending on the network model used. In addition to local management, remote management is also supported for operator maintenance and helpdesk. As an integrated device, Nokia MW1642 is an ideal solution for small offices.

SDSL is superior to ISDN in that it can support much higher data throughput (up to 2.3 Mbps) and of course the bandwidth is the same upstream as downstream. Large files can be transferred between offices and partners and back again with greater speed and efficiency. SDSL can provide a more cost-effective solution than today's leased lines which are often out of the price range of many smaller businesses.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), businesses that have from 1 to 1,000 employees, already depend on the Internet to enable and manange their businesses. Today, many are using a dial-up connection for basic email and web browsing. When communicating with clients and partners, showing products and services, or even exchanging and delivering goods, an always-on, high-speed Internet connection is a must.

SMEs, SoHo's and even many professional remote workers can be best served with an SDSL (symmetric) connection. SDSL connections provide the required support for enterprise applications such as web hosting, e-commerce and Voice over DSL (VoDSL).

"When wireless LAN is integrated into the gateway, business end users experience true mobility which can mean greater productivity," said Olli Oittinen, Senior Vice President, Nokia Broadband Systems. "Ad-hoc team working is also made much easier since WLAN eliminates the laptop wiring. We all want mobility even within our office environment; we want to take 'our desks' with us to temporary offices, home offices and on site. Nokia MW1642 allows mobility with added high-speed symmetrical DSL connectivity at an affordable price."
