KEMIRA CHEMICALS SELLS SODIUMTRIPOLYPHOSPHATE BUSINESS


Kemira Chemicals Oy's Swedish subsidiary Kemira Kemi AB has sold its sodiumtripolyphosphate business to Thermphos International B.V. based in the Netherlands. The deal is effective from 1 October 2000.

This deal is in line with the strategy of Kemira and is part of the restructuring of the Group's businesses. In the detergent industry Kemira will focus on chosen areas, especially on the sodiumpercarbonate business.

Sodiumpercarbonate, by the trade name ECOX, is an environmentally friendly bleaching agent. It is primarily used in washing and dishwashing detergents. Sodiumpercarbonate is part of Kemira's environmental business. In addition new products for the detergent industry will be launched.

Thermphos International B.V. is a global chemicals company. Its products are phosphorus and phosphorous derivates, phosphoric acid and sodiumtripolyphosphate. In 1999 the company generated sales of around EUR 307,8 million (USD 270 million) and had 900 employees.

Kemira Chemicals is a part of the Kemira Group. Major customer groups of Kemira Chemicals are in the pulp and paper industry, municipal and industrial water treatment, and other industries. The company operates world-wide with production in over 30 countries. In 1999 net sales were EUR 697 million with about 3,100 employees.
