Nokia announces secure mobile e-commerce solution for corporate markets – the Nokia Activ Signet Solution

Nokia today announced a new solution for its corporate customers, such as banks and financial institutions, who want to offer secure, yet easy to use mobile e-commerce services and business-to-business transactions. The Nokia Activ Signet Solution will provide these requirements in monetary transactions, in accessing highly sensitive information, or signing in electronic approval processes. These types of applications can be mobile banking, brokerage, payment or corporate intranet services. The Nokia Activ Signet Solution will be available commercially at the second quarter, 2001.

The new Nokia corporate solution will enable certificate and digital signature validation and online certificate enrollment. The Nokia Activ Signet Solution requires the Enterprise Edition of the Nokia Activ Server and Nokia Activ Security option with client authentication support as an enabling platform for mobile services.

"Nokia is already a leading provider of Mobile Internet access methods in the financial services industry. The Nokia Activ Signet Solution for secure mobile e-commerce will be a logical step to support our customers who are creating a vast portfolio of innovative and user-friendly services for their clients. The key building blocks of our solution will be based on open standards, therefore enabling our customers to leverage their existing investments in e-business, PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) and other corporate IT systems. With this Nokia aims to become the leading provider in the wireless security software category to the financial services industry", said Jukka Riivari, Director, Sales and Marketing, Corporates, Nokia Networks.

Nokia will provide the new solution for customers in cooperation with Nokia Activ resellers globally. The resellers are authorised separately to sell and deliver the Nokia Activ Signet Solution. At present the Nokia authorised system integrators are Accenture and HP as leading integrators in financial services globally, and regional resellers, such as Nocom in Scandinavia.

"As early adopters of mobile commerce technology, we see a strong market demand for technologies, like the WIM (Wireless Identity Module) standard, that will provide increased security for transactions in the wireless environment," said Allen J. Wolpert, Accenture partner - Technology, Financial Services, "The sooner companies, particularly in the financial services industry, implement the PKI security infrastructure, the more quickly they will be able to adopt solutions such as the Nokia Activ Signet Solution and thus offer secure mobile e-commerce capabilities to their customers."

"The Nokia Activ Signet Solution will be a key product of the future to enable secure mobile banking and mobile commerce. We know from our banking customers, that they have been looking forward to this type of solution to be able to deploy true secure mobile banking solutions in volumes. This new Nokia solution perfectly complements our offering like the HP Trust Center for operating a certification authority to provide an end-to-end solution. We will be ready to deploy the Nokia Activ Signet Solution across the globe," said Ivica Juresa, HP's European Marketing Director for Mobile Solutions.

The Nokia Activ Signet Solution will be based on open standards, such as the Wireless Public Key Infrastructure, on which the security aspects of the WAP 1.2 specifications are built. Wireless PKI covers the infrastructure and the procedures required enabling authentication and digital signatures for servers and mobile clients. It is a certificate-based cryptographic system that utilizes key pairs (public, private) associated with each party. The Nokia Activ Signet Solution will support WAP 1.2 compatible phones which will include Wireless Identity Module (WIM), the tamper resistant module for private key storage and crypto operations.
