F.L.Smidth wins 30m euro contract in Senegal

Les Ciment du Sahel S.A., a privately-owned Senegalese company, has awarded F.L.Smidth A/S a contract valued at 30 million euro (approximately 223m Danish kroner) to provide engineering and machinery for a complete, new cement production line.

The company has been formed by Groupe Fauzie LAYOUSSE S.A. whose present activities comprise construction, transport services and road aggregates. The purpose of Les Ciment du Sahel S.A., which was established in partnership with various investors, is to build a cement plant with a production capacity of 1,750 tonnes clinker per day or 600,000 tonnes cement per year. The plant will be situated at Kirène on the coast some 65 km southeast of Senegal's capital, Dakar, near the Gambian border.

The order, which is included in F.L.Smidth's sales budget for 2001, will be financed in euro through the International Finance Corporation (IFC), part of the World Bank Group, and other international and regional development banks in addition to the Danish Export Credit Fund.

The scope of the contract is mechanical equipment for the crushing plant, raw material stores, a vertical raw mill, a two-support kiln, an SF Cross-Bar clinker cooler, clinker silos, a cement mill, a packing plant, fabric filters and motors to drive the production equipment.

The engineering services comprise drawings for local manufacture of part of the production equipment and for fabricating steel structures to support the conveying equipment.

The project was launched in January 1999 with an invitation to tender issued by the Swiss consultancy firm PEG S.A., who are assisting the customer in implementing the project. This includes separate electrical, erection and civil works contracts, which are currently being negotiated by the customer.

The cement grinding plant and the packing plant are to be built first with the aim of starting up cement production using imported clinker already in May 2002, whereas the pyroprocessing line is planned to begin producing ceme
nt clinker by December 2002.
