Nokia Introduces SSL Acceleration Solutions Dramatically Improving Secure Transaction Performance

(CeBIT, HANOVER, Germany - March 21, 2001) Nokia (NYSE: NOK) today announced a new Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) appliances for accelerating network connectivity for the most demanding network environments. Enabled by Nokia’s patented IP Clustering technology, Nokia’s SSL Accelerator product line, premiering with the Nokia CA200 and the Nokia CA600 appliances delivers unprecedented availability and scalability. These products effectively address the harsh demands of high traffic e-commerce environments where thousands to millions of secure transactions are required to take place every day.

SSL connections form an encrypted pathway between individual web-browsers and websites, and are the most widely implemented secure transaction protocol worldwide. Nokia’s SSL Acceleration products are purpose built appliances that allow the SSL encryption overhead to be offloaded from overworked web servers allowing more secure connections to be handled. The Nokia SSL Appliances are simple to deploy and reduce the need to add more servers in an effort to maintain acceptable performance levels. In addition, these products offer unprecedented levels of scalability and resilience.

Nokia’s SSL Acceleration products are offered in dual or tri clusters with the benefit of sub second failover should a cluster member fail. All security associations are automatically failed over and assumed by another node in the cluster so that the user does not have to reestablish their secure connection. In addition, traffic is load balanced within the cluster and each additional SSL appliance increases the performance of the entire cluster. Users can scale the solution and perform maintenance without loosing valuable e-commerce transactions.

“E-commerce is growing at a phenomenal pace, and Internet customers are very demanding and in most cases unforgiving. They require convenience, speed and a seamless experience”, said Greg Shortell, vice president of Sales and Marketing, Nokia Internet Communications. “The Nokia patented IP Clustering technology enables this seamless experience by providing subsecond active SSL session failover and dynamic load balancing. This means if a node fails within a cluster, the cluster protocol reassigns the load to another node, providing a secure, trusted, Internet transaction each and every time.”

With the explosion of ecommerce, SSL (Secure Socket Layer) has become the de facto standard for secure commerce transactions, with over 110,000 SSL-supported sites deployed worldwide (Netcraft, October 2000). According to IDC, the market for Intelligent Content Networking products, which includes load balancing and SSL switching, is expected to grow from $203 million in 1999 to reach $4 billion by 2004. IDC also predicts that SSL traffic will account for a third of all Internet traffic by 2004.

Nokia Clustered SSL Accelerator solutions are ideal for Managed Service Providers and web-hosting companies, for large financial institutions such as banks, brokerage firms and insurance companies, and large companies generating a significant portion of their revenues from their online channel. All faced with the challenges of balancing demanding network requirements for performance, reliability, scalability and security.

The new Nokia CA200 and CA600 SSL accelerators are a natural extension to the winning portfolio of world class network protection and extension solutions already offered by Nokia to address the unique demands of today’s Internet economy.

Availability
Nokia’s new SSL Accelator appliances – the CA200 and the CA600 - will be available in North America, Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia in April 2001.
