AVONDALE, La., May 22, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Avondale Industries, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Corporation, will donate a total of 80 computers to two local public schools tomorrow to improve an existing computer laboratory and to create a new lab to help students acquire or enhance their technology skills.
On Wednesday, May 23, at 9 a.m. CDT, Avondale Industries will donate 30 computers to Livaudais Junior High School, 925 Lamar Ave., Gretna, to create a keyboard and word processing computer laboratory. Later that day, at 1 p.m. CDT, the company will donate 50 computers to L.W. Higgins High School, 7201 Lapalco Blvd., Marrero, to create a new computer laboratory.
"I am very appreciative of our employees embracing this donation program and their continuing support of education," said Avondale Industries president, Tom Kitchen. "We know the value of investing in our children's futures and support from American business can make a difference in strengthening our local educational systems."
Avondale Industries is providing the central processing unit, monitor, keyboard and mouse to build the new computer laboratories. The surplus equipment became available when the company upgraded its computer system. In a first-ever donation to Jefferson Parish schools, Microsoft Corporation is contributing the software.
This donation will provide help at the level where it can have a direct impact on students.
During the summer, information technology technicians from Avondale Industries will assist their counterparts with the two schools to set up the computers for the laboratories. The work will be completed before the start of school on Aug. 20, 2001.
"We are very thankful for this contribution because it shows the children that Avondale Industries cares about them and wants to help them succeed," said Jefferson Parish Public School Regional Executive Director George Hebert. "The association between Avondale Industries and the schools is very much appreciated and that partnership will help these schools and these communities in the future."
Earlier this month, Avondale Industries distributed $30,000 from its K-12 Education Support Program to 16 schools throughout Louisiana, including 12 public schools, two Catholic schools, one private school and one nonprofit institution. This is the second year that Avondale has participated in this program. The Northrop Grumman Litton Foundation supports higher education by its continuing sponsorship of the National Merit Scholarship Program and through endowments at selected universities throughout the United States.
