GOVERNMENT WITHDREW ITS PROPOSAL FOR THE KEMIRA RESTRUCTURING

Kemira Oyj has been notified as follows:

The Government has today decided to withdraw its proposal for the so-called Kemira restructuring, which is pending before Parliament. Ms Sinikka Mönkäre, Minister of Trade and Industry, proposed this decision at the Cabinet meeting.

The withdrawal of the proposal became topical, when the lengthening of the parliamentary proceedings and the public debate on the deal threatened to cause unreasonable inconvenience for the operations of the companies involved in this arrangement.

On 28 September 2001, the Government submitted a proposal to Parliament for approval of measures allowing relinquishment of the State's holdings in Kemira Oyj. In Parliament, the Government proposal was pending before the Commerce Committee.

Minister Sinikka Mönkäre underlines that the Government will investigate, in compliance with its active ownership policy, the possibilities of developing Kemira in the future, too. "Then the various alternatives will be examined, taking also into account the views presented during the parliamentary debate. Kemira is a good company, for the future of which the State as an owner takes the responsibility. I believe that constructive operating models for developing the company will be found", says Minister Mönkäre.
