Northrop Grumman Awarded $15.7 Million Contract to Continue Work Under NASA's Space Launch Initiative

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Dec. 21, 2001 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Integrated Systems sector has been awarded a $15.7 million contract to continue studies under NASA's Space Launch Initiative (SLI), a research and development effort to develop technologies for a second-generation reusable launch vehicle (RLV).

This competitively awarded contract brings the value of Northrop Grumman's work on the Space Launch Initiative to more than $108.3 million. In May 2001 as part of NASA's first round of SLI contract awards, the company received a four-year, $94.4 million contract to perform program management, systems integration and technology integration studies. Teamed with Orbital Sciences Corporation, Dulles, Va., on this stage of SLI, Northrop Grumman will provide systems engineering and architecture definition for the second-generation RLV program, which is laying the groundwork for greater access to space for civil exploration as well as potential defense and commercial applications. The contract has a renewal option upon successful completion of a review in March 2002.

Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems' work will be performed by its Air Combat Systems business area in El Segundo. The work leverages the company's systems integration capability as well as advanced technologies derived from years of experience in the design and development of advanced systems such as the B-2 stealth bomber and the Global Hawk unmanned reconnaissance system.

Northrop Grumman Integrated Systems, based in Dallas, Tex., is a premier aerospace systems integration enterprise. It has the capabilities to design, develop, integrate, produce and support complete aircraft systems, as well as airframe subsystems, for airborne surveillance and battle management, early warning, airborne electronic warfare and air combat missions. It is also integrating these capabilities for emerging network-centric warfare concepts.
