Northrop Grumman Names Two Executives Vice Presidents of Operating Units


HERNDON, Va., March 6, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Information Technology sector announced today the appointments of two senior level positions in its TASC business unit, effective immediately.

Dr. Kerry D. Rines has been named vice president and director of TASC's Radio Frequency (RF) Systems operating unit. Dr. Lorenzo J. Abella has been named vice president and director of TASC's Strategic Security operating unit. Both positions report to Jim Frey, TASC president, Northrop Grumman Information Technology.

Rines will lead the TASC unit that focuses on RF solutions to meet the tactical and strategic intelligence challenges of the United States. The unit provides systems engineering and technical assistance support, along with systems integration, operations support, and specialized hardware and software development for sophisticated RF systems.

Since joining the company in 1981, Rines has performed and led end-to-end systems engineering and analysis efforts in support of operationally deployed RF systems, systems under development and future system architecture studies. He has held a variety of program management positions, including program director, and most recently served as operating unit technical director. In his new position, he succeeds Abella.

Rines earned his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maine, and a master's degree and doctorate in electrical engineering from Purdue University. He has also attended executive education courses at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Harvard Business School and published a number of papers in the area of multidimensional quantization.

As director of the Strategic Security unit, Abella will lead an organization that is focused on end-to-end strategic security services for the U.S. intelligence community and related organizations. The unit's market offerings include high-end solutions such as information architecture studies, standards definition, cryptographic systems engineering, information operations, and infrastructure protection and security systems integration. He succeeds Noel F. Widdifield, who has retired.

Abella, who joined the company in 1983, previously served as senior vice president and director of TASC's Signals Intelligence unit. He has also served as vice president and director of TASC's Information Systems group and director of its Command, Control and Communications unit. Prior to joining TASC, he was assistant for Space Programs for the Office of the Secrtary of the Navy, and was head of the technical staff at the Naval Research Laboratory.

Abella holds a bachelor's, master's and a doctorate in electrical engineering from the City University of New York. In addition to post-graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he has attended executive education courses at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Harvard Business School, and has published numerous articles and reports.
