Nokia brings new edition of the Communicator Series to GSM 900/1800 markets

Nokia today welcomed a new member to its Communicator Series, the Nokia 9210i Communicator. Packed with a full set of new applications and enlarged internal memory capacity, the new Communicator takes a visible step forward from its predecessor. It is the first Nokia device to feature a web browser supporting JavaScripts (TM), Flash Player for the playback of Macromedia Flash animations, and a RealOne Player enabling real-time video and audio streaming in HSCSD networks. For the first time corporate users will also have the convenience of enhanced security with Virtual Private Network (VPN) capability. The shipments of the Nokia 9210i Communicator are expected to begin in Europe and Asia in the 2nd quarter, 2002.

The Nokia 9210i Communicator has an enhanced design with silver-colored number keys on the front. HSCSD enables fast and reliable download of email with attachments. In addition, high-speed data enables real-time streaming from the Internet, made possible with the new mobile RealOne Player. Data processing speed is enhanced with a total memory capacity of 40 MB. The memory can be expanded further with additional memory cards.

"The Communicator has justified its position as the heavy-class business tool of choice among corporate users across our markets in Europe and Asia," said Janne Jormalainen, Vice President, Product Marketing, Nokia Mobile Phones. "With the introduction of this upgraded version of the Nokia 9210 Communicator, our customers will benefit from several new functionalities desired from a leading-edge business product. For mobile entertainment seekers, the Nokia 9210i Communicator also offers a wide range of mobile applications from video streaming to exciting games."

The new features of the www-browser, such as HTML 4.01 compatibility, JavaScript support, and Cascade Style Sheet, increase the feasibility of Internet surfing. The Flash Player, supporting Macromedia Flash 5, a widely used motion delivery method in the PC environment, further enriches the experience by letting users enjoy movies, cartoons and games on their mobile terminals.

The Nokia 9210i Communicator is an ideal solution for corporates for whom secure mobile communications are a priority. The Nokia IPSec VPN client allows mobile corporate users to establish secure and reliable connections from their communicators directly to the corporate Intranet. Once a mobile user is fully authenticated to the corporate VPN, all data transferred to and from the communicator is encrypted and protected from alteration as it travels over the Internet. The Nokia VPN Client will be available as additional software for pilot VPN deployments during Q2 2002.

Other security enhancements available for the Nokia 9210i Communicator include the memory card lock, which prevents unauthorized access to the memory card. Please visit www.nokia.com/mobilecity/index.html for more information and www.softwaremarket.nokia.com to purchase new applications.

With the introduction of an optional attachable Nokia GPS module accessory, Nokia brings GPS positioning technology to its mobile phone portfolio for the first time. The Nokia GPS Module, optimized for the Nokia 9210i Communicator, makes location and destination tracking convenient, offering users a street-level address finder and route guidance for various European cities. This accessory will also enable Nokia's partners to develop additional applications for location-based services, thereby offering wider possibilities for utilizing GPS positioning.
